Safely using Phosphate-e in a nano reef

I wanted to share how I successfully and safely use phosphate e to lower phosphates without killing a single fish ever. This tank has seahorses and is fed heavy. Full of various softies and lps. Phosphate was at .37 when I started doing this each morning.

Order a 5/10 micron sock (I went with 5 from Amazon). Put it in your tank so water comes in and safely so it doesn’t accidentally topple. Add only a few drops each day if your tank is small. Use the a calculator to understand how much to dose. Leave for a bit. Measure each day and repeat the process until phosphates are in control. Works perfectly.

Thanks for the info.

I wish we understood what the issues were for lanthanum and how to always prevent them.

Most of the time there are no issues, but there are even cases where folks have used socks and still lost fish.

In any case, I agree that a sock is a prudent measure.

Most of the time, it’s tangs that are afflicted.

I’ve seen mixed reports with lanthanum: Some people use socks or skimmers with no issues, while others use both with deaths.

I personally never had issues, even as a stupid beginner dosing Seaklear into an 1-5 micron sock until my tank was foggy. The yellow tang survived despite doing this several times.

These days, I refuse to use lanthanum because GFO is so easy, safe, and effective.
