Just to start off, I've read the tang threads and have a basic understanding of tang aggression.
Here's the deal ,I have had a 4-5"sailfin 5years in a sps/lps reef tank. He is the only tang in there.
For a couple years I had a flame angel that harassed every other tank mate but the sailfin tang
( recently removed). Sailfin doesn't and hasn't paid any attention to any tank mates ever in the time frame I've had him. Recently I purchased a orange shoulder for my frag tank and I really enjoy this fishes character and now want him in my main tank. Is this even a possibility OS is about 1" smaller then SF. Like I said earlier the SF is established 5years but pays no attention to any other fish.
What are some opinions or experience.
Tank size is 90g open reef scape.

Any zebrasoma species which is the sailfin (zebrasoma veliferum) should be the last large addition to any tank. I had a desjardini that was about 3 inches and I added a massive red tail trigger like 3-4 times bigger than him in a 90 gallon and he ended up punking the trigger so I took the desjardini out. If you can take the sailfin out and add it after adding the OS or even adding it at the same time as the OS.

Thanks for the info. The sailfin is pretty easy to catch. I have caught him multiple times. Every attempt to trap a previous flame angel ended with sailfin in the trap. So I guess I could swap tanks for a month or so then bring the sailfin back.

If you can use a large acclimation box to introduce the orange shoulder, it can allow you to observe any potential aggression without risking injury, and it also helps reduce aggression too.

Orange shoulders do get pretty big and will eventually outgrow a 90.

Yes I'm aware of the size restriction, I have a buddy down the street that has a 6ft tank that will tank adopt him when ready and if or when he out grows that tank maybe I'll convert my swimming pool into a reef tank.
I also know that under my care he will be better taking care of then 99% of the other people's tanks.

An established Sailfin that's been the only tang is likely to be pretty nasty to new tangs. I've had some Sailfin that are pretty docile but by and large you're far more likely to have issues without an acclimation box.

OK I good with the acclimation box as an alternative to removing the sailfin for a month and acclimating the OS. So here's the million dallor question how long in the acclimation box? Or do you you just go by what behavior is observered ?
