Hey yall today I noticed as my sailfin was dancing around he's got a mark infront of his tail looks like maybe a cut or something its got a dark area around the injury

what would be a good route to prevent this from either spreading or preventing it from getting worse
and what could have caused this to begin with the only fish of his size in the tank is a scopas tang

Could be the two tangs got into a scuffle. The razors between their body and their tail are very sharp. When they fight, they try to slice each other.

Do you have any pictures under white light? The main thing to watch for is infection. Tough to see with the blue saturation. Also, I assume the dark spot towards the front and below the pectoral fin of the sailfin is dirt on the glass?

Keep an eye on it. One of more of my tangs have been there and they have a great ability to heal quickly and on their own. As long as water quality and diet is good, , it will likely be the result.
Just assure it healing and not developing to a bacterial issue

Yes - always have on hand meds for ich and bacteria

Seachem Kanaplex or neoplex for bacterial
Metroplex for internal
Copper safe and reliable copper test kit (no API brand) for ich

In addition to all of the other excellent advice - Sometimes wounds like that rather than creating only a local reaction - can also cause a systemic 'sepsis' - where bacteria can spread throughout the fish - without the wound looking a lot worse. You look for red streaking on the fins as well as the general condition of the fish (eating, swimming, etc etc). The wound often can look the same or better but the fish can be dying - so not trying to worry you - just look out for general condition as well. Good luck - and welcome to the forum!
