Local PetCo has a good sized Sailfin Tang (about 3 inches) for half price of 35 bucks. They have had him for over a month. He looks good except for some fin damage caused by a wrasse they said. Fin damage is looking quite a a bit better since last week. I am thinking of going back and getting him later today after I do a water change on my quarantine tank.

Any thoughts on how to get his fins back in shape?

Thanks

If you have healthy clean water, his fins should take care of themselves. Vitamins and quality nutrition are always a plus. Make sure he is getting plenty of Nori. If his fins are ripped too much or chunks taken off they may scar and not fully recover.

I hate to be this person -- but it is recommended that a sailfin resides in a minimum 180 gallon tank with a length of six feet. I'm just making certain that you aren't trying to put him in a 55 gallon or something.
Thanks for the quick reply. It will eventually go in a 120 - 5 ft long with a 55 gallon sump. Hope that would work.

If it is truly just physical damage it will head quickly with clean water and good food. However, I would put the fish into QT in case it is a bacterial issue.

I have a 25 gallon quarantine tank that I use. A minimum of 30 days before they see the DT.

You replied before I had the chance to edit out my question about the size of your tank. I apologize -- it is none of my business. You just wanted to know about the tang's fins and I did not need to question your tank size. People can get really insane about tank sizes and tangs on here. I don't want to become one of those people. However -- I love 120's. I'm sure it is gorgeous.

No offense taken. I welcome all opinions and help.

I am in progress of setting up my 120 DT. It will be ready within the next 2 months. I have a 35 hex right now with some clowns, a bangii cardinal and some soft corals.

Make sure you get a build thread started. I would love to watch its progress. :-)

Ok. Brought it home and got it floating in my QT. Little did I know the QT tank was 91 degrees. Frantically fixed the problem and drained and refilled QT to right temp and salinity of 2.023. Re floated and dripped then released. He was black in the bag and lying on his side but now is recovering in the QT and swimming normally ad eating spirulina flakes already. Doesn't seem to be breathing hard or anything. Keeping my fingers crossed I didn't kill him.... He was at a high temp of 91 for approx 10-15 minutes. Headed to a family movie so I will setup a spare tablet and use a surveillance app I have to check on him while I am at the movie LOL.

Good evening. Hope all is well. Like lobster of justice said (I love that name) keep an eye on the fins for any white cottony looking things.

I think tank size is a valid question and nothing wrong with it. The more info we get, the better the advice given. I am with you about tang police, but I took it as you were trying to help.
As you know, And i hope I did not overstep my boundaries here, just wanted to mention I liked your post and did not see a reason to edit.

Got home from the movie (Aladdin - was great) and the fish seemed to be doing good. No heavy breathing, no pale color, he was inquisitive and came to the front. Pretty sure he would have eaten more spirulina flake if I had offered. We will see what the morning brings.

Looks good I got my sailfin from Petco he and my clown rule the tank there buddys only time apart is at nite clown goes home to his nem and tang has his place.

You should be good if it is just physical damage I have a blue tang who had its right fin mangled by a coral banded shrimp removed the shrimp and fin is almost fully back 2 months later

Nice desjardin! 35 bucks is a good deal.

Most of that damage should heal. In my experience, rays and the flesh between them repairs pretty easily, but spines don't. So the very front dorsal, for example, may not grow back.

You probably know, but the two "sailfin" tangs get really big. The 5' tank with be fine for a couple years, but probably not forever.

So far he is eating like a pig LOL. Gonna have to get some seaweed sheets. He really likes the spirulina flakes.

I know the 5 ft tank won't be long term, just what I have planned for my in wall build. I was holding out for a Scopas tang but couldn't pass up the Red Sea Tang for the price. Good thing I have 2 125's and a 180 in storage. By the time he outgrows the 120 I will be setting up my 180. Been thinking of a way to do a water bridge between the 2 125's. Thought that would be awesome.

With good water and feeding it will heal pretty quickly. If you run UV it would make the healing even faster.
