So I recently purchased a 90g upgrade. It is a cube, 30x30x25.
Question is, will I be harped for getting a sailfin tang in "half the reccomended size (per LA)" tank
?????????????

I saw there was a post of an emperor in a 20g, but it was a baby. I plan on having this tank for 2 ish years before moving/upgrading. What do you all think? Baby sailfin??

In my experience, the zebrasoma family grows quite fast. Maybe it’s just my experience but with my past/current tangs. My yellows and purple grew 2x faster than my hippos/Naso/Acanthurus tangs. 2 years might close to its uncomfortable size but definitely okay if there’s a good amount of open space

The emperor was mine. He was in a 20 for 2 months, a 75 for 2 months and then went into an 8 foot 240 gallon tank.

I have a sailfin in the 240 too. I would get one in 2 years when you get a bigger tank. They grow a lot in a year when they are small.

They get up to 12 inches so you will need to upgrade your tank. Or you could just eat him for dinner if he outgrows you’re tank.

Get your tang. These guys don't grow an inch a month and 12" is size typical in the wild. I have a 660g and bought a 5" in October 2019. Its still close to that size

Honestly I would not. Contrary to the above, my Desjardini, still a sailfin, went from about 3 inches to around 8 inches within 12 months.... She’s now about an inch and a half wide too.... but in a 6 footer she is cramped and becoming an extremely aggressive fish that I put down to that, I almost hate the fish but can’t face moving her on.... it’s not about if you could do it, of course you could, and they might be fine, but if you get one that has a bold personality and turns aggressive it can be a nightmare to deal with. I’m lucky mines in a tank with other bosses to put her in her place.
