Sailfin tang

I just “inherited” 40breeder tank with a sailfin tang, I know they need a larger aquarium and my largest is a 125 gallon reef tank. Is that large enough for the sailfin? It’s only around 3 inches now

Not so much about the gallons as it is the length. I would say minmium size for a Sailfin with be a 6ft long tank.

I have a 160-gallon display, and my sailfin is happier than a clam - especially considering how much time he spends in the rocks, caves, etc. My sailfin is also around 3” in length (less than a year old), so I think the 125-gallon of the OP (probably 4-5 feet in length) is probably more than sufficient for at least the short and mid-term.

i think default 125 is 6 ft

Sailfins get very large. In the short term yes a 125 will be large enough. After several years when that tang is the size of a dinnerplate you migh second guess that tank.

That was kind of my point, ie: he’s got a few years to figure out if he even wants to keep it. And assuming it lives a long and uneventful life...

I've seen them HUGE. 8ft tank is recommended.
