I am conserned about adding my sailfin to my 180G. I have heard some pretty bad story's from my LFS owner and another one from one of her customers... My sailfin killed a kole in a 70G. It was kinda my fault because O2 got low in the tank (wish home Depot was open later lol).

That being said this book says they are the least aggressive out if all in their family and I have a hard time believing that.

What is everyone's experience with sailfins and what would you suggest I should do? Should I add him last, get rid of him, add him at the same time....

I do want to try to get smaller tangs so that I can watch them grow with the tank and to keep cost down!

I had a sail fin and a yellow in a 29g tank for well over a year. (I was new to the hobby and stupid at the time) and they would wave their backsides at each other a bit but didn’t actually hurt each other. They were happy up until the were re homed into a much larger tank.

I would say add it together with whatever tangs you plan on getting or last. If things get bad you can always re home him later.

They do get huge, and will be aggressive when they get too large for their tank. I keep Sailfin many years ago when I started out. One in a 90 gal tank, which out grow it quickly and also keep one in a 420 gal. Even in 420 I feel that it is too large and really seem out of place becasue he is so huge.
Right now I have a 320 and will not keep any fish larger than my PBT with grew from about 2 inches to 8 inches in 2.5 years (since 4/2018)
Tangs grow fast, f you take good care of them. A Sailfin of either species will reach 10 inches quickly easy. Does not really mater hat the "experts" minimum tank size recommendation is, do you really want a 10+ inches fish in your 180 gal tank. Although proportional wise, the fins proportion to the body will get lessen as they age and grow, the vertical height of a Saifin tang is still impressive. His height will easily exceed 10 inches. He will not be extending his very much if any. I had large fish and large tanks over the last 20 years. IMO, large fish seem so out of place and sad in home aquarium.

Please think hard before you get one.
Tangs do get aggressive when they are cramps. There will not be any doubt that a Sailfin will be cramp in a 180 in the future. This coupe with their huge size certainly can cause plenty of damage.

I don't know if I can get him out of the tang tho

I have a sailing and starry and the starry seems much less aggressive, they have only been a little aggressive to eachother at first in my tank nothing else. I have firefish and clowns

Seems a bit extreme imo. There r thousands of people who keep sailfins and similar fish in a 180 or smaller with great success but I guess it depends on your definition of success I guess

I've owned 2 sailfins. The first was the biggest fish in the tank and it was the boss. But everybody fell in line and there were no real issues. The second has been very timid and let the yellow tang be the boss. Only recently as it has grown has it started to be slightly more aggressive

Agreed. Ive had 2 in 55 gal and seems they have been happier in there than other tanks.

There are also thousands of people who have kept "dory" in 10-20g tanks....

You can keep a sailfin in a 180, just not forever imo
