Hey guys and girls,
I'm new here to reef2reef. Ive been doing freshwater tanks for many years and decided to finally make the plunge into Reefing. im so glad i did, its super exciting. I've been reading all the forums on this site for a couple months and this seems to be where all the Reef Geniuses hang out, so here i am. I am actually planning on going back to school (i have a degree in Culinary arts) to become a marine biologist. I love it so far but of course have had a few issues along the way. So here it goes.

I have been having a really hard time with the kh test from the 3 different brand test kits i have and heard Salifert was the best so i started using that. Problem is, when i follow the instructions (which i also looked up a youtube video from a guy who apparently met a salifert representative who told him exactly how to do the test) and i used the entire 1 ml syringe into the blue liquid and it didnt change colors. Does this mean i have really high alkalinity/carbonate hardness or really low? i've repeated the test 4 times and gotten the same result. I dont know which way to go with my tank but i have live rock that i dont want to die off. any help would be amazing, Thank you!

If the solution never turned from purple to blue your alkalinity is greater than 16 dKH. I don’t know if that is possible but unlikely for sure. But you said it stayed blue so I’m not sure. Can you take a sample to a LFS?

Welcome!

When you have to use more than 1 syringe you add the 2nd syringe result to the 1st one for a final figure.
The Salifert kit turns Blue to light purple then rose or pink.
The correct reading is the light purple, when one more drop will change the color drastically to rose or pink.

Looks like I had my colors backward :)
