Is there any value in keeping the salinity in my quarantine tank on the low side, like 1.020?

I start mine at what the fish have been in, test the bag and match qt to it. Float for temperature, gently pour fish into strainer and move into qt. No need for drip acclimation.

I adjust salinity up to my display over time, usually a couple weeks.

What benefit are you trying to gain through maintaining lower specific gravity? 1.020 isn't low enough to kill any parasites, guess you would just use less salt.

If I remember correctly, my local store suggested it.

Usually lfs keep fish only systems lower to help new fish settle in better, since fish from wholesalers usually come in at about 1.016. The jump to full reef salinity is pretty big, so they keep it in the middle at about 1.020 so that fish going in, or going out to someone's home, don't have as big of a climb. I would match the salinity of wherever you plan to get fish from.
