I got a feather duster and a turbo snail today, I haven't put them in yet, but I have 4 nassarius snails in there already. 2 haven't moved in a week. For some reason I decided to check the salinity, first I thought it said 1.024, thjen I realized it was at 1.034. Please help me and fast, I've already got a bucket of RODI water filling up, but I'm not sure if that will fix it.

Also I should mention I don't have any calibration fluid to check if the refractometer is correct.

Any other livestock in there? Do you have a QT area you can put the new additions into? Do you know if the salinity got that high in a short period or was it more gradual? Any other livestock in the DT?

Why don't you make 1 gallon of saltwater or whatever amount you are comfortable measuring at 1.026 or whatever you normally make and check that for basis. Not perfect but better then nothing. For what it's worth I don't recall the last time I calibrated my refractometer but every time I measure out salt it comes out what I expect it to so I have no reason to believe it's off.

Calibrate the refractometer with deionized water. Put a few drops on the slide and correct the blue line to zero. Know that this will not give you accurate numbers, but it's better than nothing. As far as correcting the salinity, slower is better. Your salinity didn't get high over night, unless you did a big water change with water with really high salinity.

A salinity standard should be your next purchase (or you should follow Randy's recipe and make your own).

No livestock except for the snails. I have no QT unfortunately. I wasn't able to check the salinity earlier.

Do you think a snail could've discovered a large amount of salt and accidentally released it into the tank or something? I tried the RODI test and it measured at 1.000

no.

did you test the saltwater before you put it into the tank? what did it read then? I assume it would have been high as well.

are you topping off with freshwater?

no.

My mom had to pour in the saltwater (which I did not tell her to do until I came back) but I was away and while I was away, I did not get back until Sunday. I wasn't able to measure the salinity. I poured in ~3 4oz cups of salt before this.

it's possible. and if your snails aren't moving at all they might already be dead...
I did a smell test, and then didn't smell bad, since I've heard if you smell them, you will know if they are dead.

I would remove a quart or so of water from the tank and replace it with freshwater. do this until the salinity is correct. every half hour or so, depending on how large your tank is.

The salinity has gone down by .004 already, I hope I can get it down more in the next hour. I could save these fish I think

Should I add the feather duster and snail? I took out a lot of water and now my drip acclimation system isn't working.

this video within the first 30 seconds helped me figure out what happened: I topped it off with saltwater, without taking any out, resulting in a higher salinity.,
