i recently got an apex for my 75 g mixed reef. I am thinking of adding kalk to my ATO, but I now notice my salinity drops as well, i assume salt creep and skimmer. Could I do KW and low salinity salt in my ATO to try to keep levels more stable. This is more theory than application numbers. In a week my salinity drops 1.026 to 1.024 without water changes and about 30 pts cal, so there will be math involved later. So can i Kill multiple birds with one solution?

There shouldn't be any SG drop occuring with evaporation, it would be opposite if no top off happened. If your ATO is keeping up, your SG should stay consistent and have no measurable difference.

How are you measuring SG? Through your Apex? If so, I suspect a problem with your probe.

I’m measuring salinity with Apex and refractometer. You are correct for a closed system, but exporting salt via skimmer and salt creep.

Closed loop or not, SG shouldn't drop like that, unless you're using your skimmer as a means of water change. salt creep is a different story, but you would have to look at your system of why you're getting that much salt creep.

Reruns are above water line and skimmer is filling up almost daily with semi clear water skim, and the skimmer is hob. But has anyone done a semi salt kalk wto solution.

You shouldn't use salt water with concentrated Kalkwasser. The elevated DKH and PH will cause a precipitation event inside the ATO reservoir. Thus, dropping the calcium out of suspension and causing everything in the ATO to be coated with calcium. This will cause the Kalkwasser to be useless.

You need to find out why the skimmer is overflowing and filling with water, not skimmate. Respectfully.

What hob skimmer are you using? Perhaps we can get someone who uses it to help tune :)

in the interim perhaps you could take the skimmer offline and Turn your ato off till your reef reaches 35ppt then refill with nsw.
Can also test your skimmer cup water for No3 to see if ever need to turn back on.

Good to know!

Instant ocean sea cyclone. I know it’s crap. Took it off line and things are more stable. Still some splashing issues I need to solve so I’m not using ATO to replace what splashes out.

What is still splashing?

have a pic of your tank? Maybe we can get this sorted out :)

Well, I cleaned skimmer and put back in tank, it zapped me, so that is gone. Put return heads under water, and sump can handle, so much for that. Next project is extending return line into sock. Then new skimmer. So we shall see.
