I have 180 gallons of water at 1.024 SG. I am going to take 7 gallons of that water out and replace it with 7 gallons of water at 1.029 SG. Will it harm anything in the mixed reef?

It shouldn't, that is less than 4% of the water volume so it shouldn't impact it that much

It will not hurt but why are you concerned with 1.024 thats okay.

I wasn't concerned with the 1.024. I was just making a small water change and added too much salt...lol...I played with it for hours and it just was not my day for mixing salt. I wanted to make sure it was OK to add it that hot. :frusty: I prefer 1.025 though.

What are you using to measure your SG? If it's a swing arm type of hydrometer, it may not be that accurate in the first place. I would suggest that if you don't already have one, getting a decent refractometer and calibration fluid (35ppt/1.0264/53 mS/cm) to keep it accurate. If your SG is accurate, it really isn't low enough that you have to worry, I'd just use your make up water to cover your evaporation instead of plain RO/DI, until it gets up to a level your happy with.
Here's a good read on the subject:

I use a refractometer plus double check with a glass/floating hydrometer, so I know it's right. I wanted to make the small water change because things just weren't looking perky. Fresh saltwater always seems to make things happier. I'll do the real water change in a few days. Thanks for the article!
