Hi Gang. So it's been a minute since I calibrated my refractometer...like three years. I know, I know, some people do it every time they test. It slipped my mind. I test once a month and follow the directions on the salt mix. Everything in the tank seems happy and healthy, so why mess with what appears not to be broken? I decided it was time to calibrate the refractometer and it did require an adjustment. I was surprised to find that my salinity was 1.030! My refractor was reading 1.025 before the recalibration, just a little under my desired 1.026.

The obvious solution is to remove saltwater and add RO, but how much? I have a 32 gallon Biocube. Yes there is rock, equipment and critters in there. When I filled it up with rock inside, I put in just about 30 gallons as I recall. As I tell my daughter, there are two things I don't know and that's math.

Here's the word problem: How many gallons/ounces should be removed to lower the salinity by .004 in 30 gallons of saltwater with a salinity of 1.030?
