Salt brands?

This is one of those questions where you can ask 10 people and get 12 answers!!! For what it's worth, I use Red Sea Coral Pro.

Get a salt that's easy to get. Common brands IO, RC, Reef salt, Red Sea, Coralife, Aquavitro Salinity, ESV, theirs no magic in anyone of these. Basically some people prefer paying more and thinking you don't have to dose. It all depends what type of tank you Set up.
At first I try a lot of different brands. Made not much of difference except spending more money. I'm now using Reef Salt by seachem.

Either of you ever heard of aqua forest salt? Decided to try it out. Was a better price than instant ocean.

I prefer Oceanic due to it's high cal & mag levels. Means I have to dose less. If I can't get Oceanic, I just use regular IO and raise the cal level manually using calcium chloride.

I love red sea coral pro. Been using it for a few years now with no complaints

I've been very pleased with HW from BRS. I've tried most of the big name salt choices over the last 15 years or so, grew up on IO, forever... But what I love about HW is ZERO sludge and mixes clean, super fast and the params are where they need to be. I never have to clean my mixing container anymore. I'm sure there are other salts out there that the same can be said about, but HW has been fantastic salt for me. I have not tried Aqua Forest yet, but a buddy of mine started using it and he loves it. Like others have said, you will get a dozen answers that vary from person to person. Do some digging and you'll find plenty of threads to chew on! :D

Been using IO since the 80's when it was for the most part the only choice for salt mix at any LFS, now I use IO reef crystals and it works fine for me.

I agree with others that there are many posts in regards to this topic, but still you should be answered.

The brand of salt that works for what you do is the best for you.

I run my system with alk in the 7.5 Range and Calcium at about 420. I like the lower alk and calcium numbers that are in the Regular Red Sea (non coral pro) . I run a calcium reactor to keep the levels where I want them.

I tried running the Coral Pro and after each water change it was as if I got a mini alk spike

Red sea coral pro tops it.

I've tried Instant ocean, reef crystals, and fluval.
The IO and RC have crazy high lithium. (it's been found to inihibit embryotic development so I'm sure it's bad in general for biological functions; look at what it does to people lol)
Fluval was really awesome, saw significant growth, but iirc Boron and uhhhh, something else was a little high.
Since switching to RSCP I've had an entirely different experience keeping corals than all the years before.

You have to do smaller wc's with it though. In my 20(prolly 16-17 gallons), a 1 gallon wc moves alk up by 1 dkh.

I am using it currently. Its ok but I have not had it long enough to test consistency when mixing. It dissolves fast though. I get it for $35 a box so thats why I swapped to it.

If this were a court of law, opposing council would have objected, stating, "Your Honor, already asked and answered." :)

Here's my two cents.....and maybe appreciated more if you are of Italian descent. Put 25 Italians in a room and ask them whose mother makes the best sauce (Note, some refer to this as gravy). You will get 25 different answers, with some vehemently defending their choice. Well, salt is the same way. No one brand is "better" than the other. And just like the sauce, you will get some who strongly argue that their brand is better than all others. The only difference is that some have different amounts of "spices."

My personal preference are salts that give me something close to natural seawater. I don't care for the high alk/calc salts because of swings during a water change. Note, I do target natural seawater numbers for Alk and Calc. I'm currently using IO, with my mom's sauce far superior to whatever you call that stuff your mother makes! :D

I tried it all , salinty - esv - d&d h20 - brightwell - tropic marin - red sea ... etc
Always came back to reef crystals. ( cheap , and always easy to find )

I just wish IO sold salt in buckets for the 50 gallon back because it sucks when you open it up then you have to like twist the top of it all sorts of ways and put a rubber band around it to make sure it isn't exposed to the air otherwise it will clump. That's kind of why I ordered that other salt is because it came in a bucket and for a cheaper price it makes more salt water. The bucket thing for me though is just laziness...lol
