I currently use filtered fortified seawater for my nano water changes however when I was bored browsing salt mixies I found some oddities. On EBay for example „F
ast Dissolving Sea Salt Aquarium Fish Tank Ocean Seawater For Marine Fish“ I been trying to tell the seller he Marketing aquarium salt as marine/reef salt and he doesn’t listen. My question is how many fish possibly die every year due to mislabeling of a product when it comes to a novice buyer who probably doesn’t know the difference. I’m in rural upstate NY any LFS I previously had closed down and well all I have is Petco in oneonta ny that I know of. I’m a regular there stopping by every week before and after my food shopping if I see something i like. Often I find some people fascinated with saltwater fish that often want one and well they talk to thier friend or significant Other about it, common question from them is „how do you make Saltwater“ I Generally Tell them Reef/marine salt mix like Instant Ocean/Reef Crystals or Coral Pro which many reefers find best along with how it’s cheaper on line, ie enough salt to make 220gallons for $54 dollars, and if lazy the premade salt water they carry and how you gotta monitor your salinity and keep it at 1.023-1.026 ideally along with needing a Hydrometer preferably a Instant Ocean for it’s known accuracy among Hydrometers but preferably a refractometer. I tell them the importance of live sand and how the type of substrate effects your fish choices when it comes to blennys that prefer a finer Grain of Sand. But overall I find a lot of questions regarding what Saltwater is and honestly we should just call it Seawater to avoid confusion to an extent lol. Thoughts? And has anyone ever ran into similar questions regarding saltwater and if so what were they? I wanna help better the miss understanding so more people can get into saltwater fish keeping because I’m enjoying my nano more than my freshwater tanks and plan to go bigger soon.
