Hi guys I have a new tank which is 850 litres in total including sump. My current tank is 300l I wanted to get my new tank running would it be ok to add fresh water to new tank and add salt directly into the tank as there’s nothing in it? And then add some of the old tanks water then transfer rock, coral and fish?

hi i would not, would mix saltwater then add to tank ,let run a few days w circulation,no lights, let clear, get temperate

That’s nearly 40 15 litre buckets of mixing Salt my arms Going to fall off lol
Is there a reason you say you wouldn’t add directly to the tank?

unmixed residue will settle on bottom ,most salts do not mix 100% all the time ,normally lil, left in bottom of bucket

Hi sorry can someone let me know if I can run a sump without a protein skimmer for a while. All I’ll have in the sump will be filter socks to some filter media (foam pads) and a return pump.

that is fine, once you get your skimmer you may have to adjust your water level in the sump

Doesn’t hurt, just remember you still have to clean the sump so it doesn’t become a nutrient trap. I run media bricks but I also started with all dry rock and a large piece of live rock.

What else should I get for the sump a protein skimmer, what else? What do the media bricks do?

Before you start adding stuff to your sump, you might want to research what each does, the pros and cons of each, and figure out what works bet for your setup. You should only add equipment that will help solve a problem or aid you in some way, otherwise you are likely to needlessly buy something that will provide little benefit or take up real estate for other equipment in the future.

I just want a basic sump to be set up, because at the moment there’s going to be literally 4/5 filter pads and a small amount of cylinders rings that were in my canister filter I have a lot of space

I definitely want to have a refugium sort of thing in one of the compartments

Have you already bought the sump or are you making your own? You might check some of the sump design threads on here and see the input people give. It's important to ensure it's well planned for both water height, baffles, flow, lighting, etc. Also make sure to try and figure out the pieces you may want now or in the future- you don't need to buy them or install now, but figure out your plans for dealing with nutrient export, whether you want to run certain media and if so, where will you put them and how will you plumb them. You can always add these on later, but if you have a rough plan, it makes it easier now during the planning stage.

I have the sump and the tank and the plumping for the in take and outtake, just need to figure out what’s going in the sump. Should I run the canister filter on the tank till I get the sump contents sorted?
