Hi everyone,
This is a review of HW Marinemix reefer salt (picture credit BRS)
Been in the hobby now for just over 2 years. I started out using salinity salt and was very happy with it for the most part except for waiting about 6+ hours for the water to mix and clear up, and if i heated the water and waited more than an hour or so to add i would have a white film form on the bucket and pump which i assume was calcium carbonate coming out of solution.
I recently decided to switch after a bunch of research to HW Marinemix reefer.
First, the bad- it is advertised to take 1/2 cup of salt per gal to bring up to 35ppt. In my experience with this salt it takes 6 full cups per 5 gal to 35ppt. So, more than double the advertised amount.
Second, the good- this saltmix mixes and clears up in 10-15min. I've read about people having issues with this salt but i haven't encountered any problems. My procedure for mixing is to let my RODI water come to room temp, start pump and heater, and add the salt. The salt mixes and clears up super fast, much faster than the heater will raise the temp to match my display. I have not experienced any residue left after mixing as of yet. I only do 5-10 gal WCs in my 60 cube and I've mixed up 5-6 batches with very consistent results.
Tested params- Ca- 460ppm (salifert), mg- 1360ppm(salifert), alk- 8.6 DKH(hanna)
Overall I'm very happy with this salt. I love that i don't have to mix and wait overnight to use. I can mix and use as soon as the heater brings it up to temp. The extra salt needed to bring up to proper salinity is disappointing but the positives far outweigh that negative point in my opinion.
