My question is that since I dose essential elements do I need to spend money on reef targeted salts?

Depends on your setup, chemistry and livestock. I dose ALK, CA and MG with an extensive filtration, thus I don't do water changes at all. If you are specifically referring to ALK, CA and MG, you might want to consider adding trace elements like Red Sea's Coloration Program.
