Salt water mix help

Everyone has their own opinion/experience on which salt is "best". I like and use Instant Ocean Reef Crystals. I have a 32g brute trashcan on wheels that I fill with RODI water, then I heat and mix the water with a heater and a powerhead, then add the salt, let mix for 12+ hours (I try to get closer to 24 if I can, but sometimes that just doesn't happen).

Ok I know this maybe a dumb question but what salt mix is best and if u mix your own saltwater what your method?

David

It's a great question! I use Reef Crystals too. I have LPS and soft corals in my tank. I don't have experience with sps but I'm sure others will chime in too. I switched to RC after a bad experience using seawater, and the tank has never looked better. Good luck!

The best salt mix is the one that is available locally and best fits your tank and budget. (There are many good salt mixes on the market so it's actually pretty hard to go wrong.)

Mixing instructions should be on the container of salt you buy. Generally, 1/2 cup per gallon of RODI will get the salinity you want.

Water changes are probably physically the hardest things about taking care of your reef (water is heavy!), and also one of the best things for your reef.

Due to the difficulty and other factors you will eventually want to skip water changes, so put creativity and effort into making them as easy and quick to do as possible. Could mean buying an extra bucket or a pump and a super long hose, or something more sophisticated!

Check out my Water Change A Day thread for one good way of doing them, but some great links to give you other ideas too!

Good luck!

I use reef crystals as well. I use 20 gallon brute with powerhead to mix.
I keep a mixed tank and sps seem to be doing well.
No issues so far.

I'm ahead of u on the water changes I setup a water change station with a pump to pump water in, and to remove water I'm using a water faucet siphon.
