Is there a difference between normal salt eg. Pool salt and the branded aquarium salts?

Oh yeah, there's even a big difference between reef salts.

Well, instant ocean for example is a good baseline salt for a fish only tank (IMO). I personally use royal nature because its actually dried seawater from the red sea. They (I believe) add a few trace elements that are important to corals growth. Even with high end salt you'll still need to add trace elements but the difference is you'll need less. People are going to come out of the woodwork saying IO is just fine, and it is. I can just say I've used both and I can tell you my reef likes a higher grade of salt.

If you've ever noticed that our reef salt cakes up when exposed to air, then that Is a perfect example of why you shouldn't use "regular", salt. When was the last time that you saw salt in a salt shaker cake up?...never! That is because it has additives to keep it from doing so amongst other stuff. So basically, "regular", salt or pool salt has stuff u don't want in it and it doesn't have stuff that u need in it. I'm not a scientist, I'm just saying...makes sense right? If it was all a marketing scheme, I'm sure public aquariums would use "pool", salt lol

My thought is, if your going to attempt this hobby, don't be half fast about it. The things we house in our tanks are much more sensitive than pool salt has the capability of sustaining.

What we call salt is usually sodium chloride. Ocean water has a mixture of different salts in it. By far the biggest percentage is sodium chloride. But there are others also in smaller percentages, magnesium, carbonates, iron, and so on. Ocean creatures will not do well in a sodium chloride only solution.

There are synthetic mixes, like instant ocean, that approximate ocean water salts and they work very well.
