salt

All depends on what water parameters you want for the corals you decide to keep. Search net for a table that identifies different values

They’re all similar. If you’re using your salt to maintain Cal/Alk/Mag, use the one that matches your tank. If you’re adjusting to match, you can use whatever you want. I use IO because it’s the cheapest and a good quality salt.

Wide range of values among different types of salt mixes , so pick one best for your corals

Personally, for my mixed reef I use RedSea Blue Bucket mixed 50/50 with RedSea Coral Pro to provide the levels of Alk, Ca and Mg I think is optimum.

Live Aquaria salt from Petco. Cheap and works great.
Params are pretty middle of the road.

The one that you have the easiest access to, in your price comfort zone and when mixed with RODI, is close to the parameters you keep.

In the end, salt is salt.

Some of the best tanks I have ever seen are fed, the cheapest salt.

The salt is not a big deal. Any of the major kinds will work in a reef tank as far as I can tell.

Bulk Reef Supply has a video discussing the various salt mixes and ratings on them (which should be take with a pinch of salt).

There are salt mixes made for reefs (enhanced calcium, magnesium and maybe trace elements for hard corals). But again, many people do fine with just plain old instant ocean.

I have used instant ocean. It leaves a crud residue after mixing but muriatic acid removes it easily. I am now using Reef Crystals (less crud) but I am considering changing back to Instant Ocean.

I have thought of going with Trophic Marin Pro for the clean mixing and the pharmaceutical grade ingredients.

But as far as I can tell, what makes the difference is the reefer and their maintenance and salt mixes are not that big a deal.
