Hello everyone! I am new to saltwater aquariums. I am still unsure which light I should get for my 55g tank. I currently have the basic hood light that comes in the Aqueon 55g starter kit. I am looking for something economical and not too expensive. I read that the CurrentUSA Orbit Marine Aquarium LED light is a good choice. Thought? Any other recommendation. Thank you!

Welcome to R2R! I would skip on the current lights. While they look good and have a good price on them, they're not very strong and you'll end up dissatisfied and looking to upgrade your lights soon anyway. I'm a firm believer of spend the money right away instead of buying cheap and then spending more later, in the long run you save money. If you're still looking for something economical, SB reef lights or reefbreeder lights are not to badly priced and will grow any coral you put under them :)

Thank you for that information. So SB reef lights and reefbreeder lights are two different brands or the name of lights?

Two different companies :)

Hello,

First welcome to R2R where you will find lots of lovely people and tons and tons of information. There are tons of people on here and most of them have (if not all ) have good solid advice. Be prepared to get great advice, but lots of different advice as well.

Do you have an idea on what your going to do with your tank? Are you planning on going larger or, soft corals or straight lps and sps or sps dominant etc. The reason I ask is, lighting answers will vary based on that. I use the non ic loop current marine pros and they are absolute amazing. They will grow anything you throw at them and well also. The new current ic loop are still great lights, but they are designed for a different purpose. If your doing a small tank such as a 55, and doing moderate sps and lps and softies you would be fine an example is look at @120reefkeeper tank, he uses the new ic loops and it’s amazing. Current customer service is absolutely stunning and they are excellent to work with.

I would not recommend the ic loop lights on anything bigger than a 125 and that is even pushing it. If you went that size and had sps, you would have to keep it in the upper 8 inches of the tank. Even speaking with current these lights the ic loop version are not designed for extreme reefing sps dominant, clams, extremely high par related corals in which half of sps fit into. Try not to get caught up in how much par they produce, most corals even light demanding ones do just fine with 200 par.

@Crabs Mcjones he loves Kessill and they are amazing lights and his suggestions are good as well. I suggest you research all of them before you buy and take a good look at what your planning to do. Every light will look and perform different on every tank. You need to find one that you will like and enjoy and Fits your budget. I think they are all close to the same price range (not certain) but another thing to consider with the new ic loop lights is current usa is releasing a newer version here soon. They will be supposedly similar to the marine pros I have (60 degree lens ) with even more power than those (and they have some power), yet they will also include the loop system in with the Bluetooth system as well. Plus we would love to see pics as well :).

@Sarah24! Thank you for that information. So you recommend CurrentUSA IC loop lights? I saw them and they look really awesome. I am not to sure yet. I am still learning about corals. Right now I have live rock, 1 firefish, 1 ocellaris clownfish (the other died today), 2 pajama cardinal and 2 green chromis and a cleaning crew.

Hello

I’m glad you have taking the plung into to salt water yay. I do recommend the current usa ic loop lights. Ehh as I say this and in a good way don’t throw a salt shaker at me :). These lights are really good, but you have to know their limits which is also why you should absolutely read @120reefkeeper thread.

Current usa is an amazing company and (being fair so is kessill Ecotech, mitras, sb etc). I picked current mainly because of well two reasons first I have had tremendous succcess with their orbit marine pro. (The one I have is a step above yours and sadly they don’t make it any more either) and two and on going their customer service is just soooooooooooo awesome.

So now if I know what you have in mind for coral I can help direct where to start down the right path. Current usa is one of the few companies that is Still old school. Meaning as soon as you give them a tracking number, they just send a replacement. In my experience lol they usually overnight it or like 2 days or if I’m not in a hurry three days. They are also one who if your light breaks and they don’t make it any more you get the upgraded light per their policy. But their lights don’t ever break (well for me that is). So their customer service is really what made me drink the milk.

In regards to these lights they will have less shadow effect than standard puck style lights. Another nice feature is they sit on top of your tank and that’s awesome. The idea of my light falling into the tank terrifies me, so I don’t hang them lol. Also they are one of the few who if your light is wet is actually water resistant to like three feet I think. In addition though I have had friends and even my lfs where the lights did fall in and went to the death yard. Even then current replaced them which is awesome.

I won’t lie these lights are a beginner to intermediate style light. Current has even spoken to me and said that they do not strongly recommend sps corals. If so you have to place high up in the tank and even then 50/50 gamble. Now I have seen them absolutely grow sps like no other, and the corals look amazing. But they are very strategicly placed as well and have a perfect ecosystem for it to work.

As far as lps and softies go with them, the sky is the limit and they do very well. They are also much easier to use than other lights I have beta tested. Their new Bluetooth device makes them smart phone savoy. Sorry I’m learning that still (no not the Bluetooth device lol the Smart phone). Their loop system is actually pretty sweet and easy. But with my systems it’s been awesome and love it, but gets very very complex running full loop past the normal two or three wave makers and 1 return and set of lights (which mine won’t even connect to).

One other aspect is if you upgrade your tank or dive into sps. If that does happen you could probably work something out with current to upgrade to their newer better light. I can’t say they will for sure etc or if they will in the future even for me, but they always say they will. So far they have always kept their promise also. Yes there is a cost involved but pretty small compared to Ecotech and others actually it’s maybe a 1/3 or the cost roughly.

But I love their lights I love their wave makers and return pumps. They are very very under rated and their quality is excellent. To be fair I’m sure they have had defective units but every company does. I’m sure people have not enjoyed them but again what company has not? These lights are designed for people exactly in your shoes. They make reefing a little easier, not super complex and still strong enough to be dangerous but nothing like the 60 degree marine pros or the mitras ghl 7200 or kessills 700s etc.

If you need more help please feel free to ask me I’m here to help.

Cheers
Sarah

Welcome to R2R. Depending on what type of tank your looking to keep I'd say pay for better lighting now so you dont have to upgrade in the future. I wouldn't waste money on the fluval light, the current lights are a bit weak but are better than fluval. Price wise, reef breeders is a great light that will be good for all types of coral.
