This is something that I have been wondering for a while. How do you personally determine how many fish you can have in your tank?

I have a little 13g Nano, and people’s opinion vary on what you can keep in it. Some say one or 2 fish, some might say 3 or 4.

How do you decide on how many fish you have in your tank? Do you do it based on research, what people recommend, what your tank looks like (i.e. does it look full), the parameters, or some other method?

Great Question.....and the answer lies within the fish you choose. Bigger the fish, the less you can have. For a 13g tank, you best think small fish, gobies, blennies, etc...I like a lot of action, so the smaller the fish, the more you can put into your 14g.....Go slow too and let the tank adjust to each new fish.....in the long run you will win and keep the tank happy. Best of luck! E

You also need to think about fish habitats when planning for a small tank. Mandarin gobies aren't going to need a great deal of space in which to swim, but you're going to have a terrible time feeding one unless it's learned to eat prepared foods. Smaller fish that zip around in the water column, like fairy wrasses, are going to be much too confined.

Thanks for the replies.

I’m also interested in the general question. For example, how do people with 100g tanks decide how much to add?

Type of fish, territory and adult aggression.

Example, my adult spawning clowns will not tolerate others in anything 20g or smaller.

Many fish are fine as juvies but they can get attitudes as they grow.
