Saltwater newbie need MAJOR HELP (DMV)

Yes... U are exactly who I'm looking for (no really thanks everyone!!!!)
How did u turn it around? U completely changed the water to Rodi? And I read 1 of per gallon also... Trying to decide between cured and uncured (cuz I'm new and it's costly). So if this were u 7 mths back.... What was ur First step? And Thank u!!!
I found a local reefer who also wholesales saltwater equipment. I got really lucky ... I'm a trusting guy so I bought live rock from him directly and immediately put the rock in my display tank.

hear Petco is the worst lls
Petco is known for having sick fish and employees who don't know much. It is still fine to get dry goods from there. If you decide you want to quarantine fish, which is a great thing to do but many people don't, you can even get fish from there. I have picked up a couple Petco fish and nursed them back to health.
When you get further along you need high quality test kits. To start all you really need is pH, Ammonia, and Nitrate. You can get the cheap API tests for now. After the first month or two you won't use Ammonia again. If you decide to get a Nitrite test you won't use that after 2 months either.

You've been linked to some great posts, enjoy your reading!

Ok API test thanks

Welcome and just take your time when reefing. Just keep up your maintenance and testing and you should be fine. I have been using tap water for my tanks for ten years here in DC. I do use prime when doing water changes. You should look into adding more rock for bacteria to break down in your tank before adding fish. You can buy some dry rock and buy a couple of live rock pieces from Lfs to seed your tank. Coralline algae will spread. I may have to visit glen Burnie for some sand. This is a great place to look up things about what's going on with your tank.

Hi Kiki. I'm familiar with the DMV reef keeping community. I'll PM you with details. That is a tough area for LFS's due to real estate prices. Many are going out of business.
