hey all,

I wanted to start a build thread for my a new SW tank. I am hoping to get a reef ready glass tank that is either 90G or 120G (if I can find a 48” sized 120G tank, that is my preference. if anyone has knows where I can find one, please let me know, feedback I am getting is it is a newer tank and not always readily available)

Looking to set up an aggressive fish set up with the following stock:
  • 1-2 huma triggers
  • Porcupine puffer
  • Volitan Lionfish
  • Snowflake eel
Any thoughts on stock compatibility and load? From my research and past experience, I have had no issues with thes fish, so am confident in these choices. Do you think more fish can be fit in the tank? Plan on getting them small and letting them grow and thrive, so any feedback here is appreciated!

Would love to see some examples of cool layouts of aggressive FO tanks if anyone has pictures to show off! Am looking for any and all ideas here to make my tank look great and work well with the marinelife.

Still sourcing equipment such as protein skimmer, wet/dry filter, heater and more, goal is to have as much equipment hidden in Sump as possible, and have a nice canopy that hides the lights as well.

I know coral is not in question with these fish, and seems like a minimalist approach with dry sand and dry rock is the best option from the feedback I am getting from my local fish expert, but wanted to get feedback on the complete lack of live rock due to the biological filtration benefits that it will serve.

I look forward to updating the thread as I go! I am new to the forums but have already learned so much. Great to have you all here!

Here is my fish only set up. It is a RR 120 48”x24”x24 from Planet Aquariums in Dallas Texas.
Also, I would just do 1 Humu trigger. It’ll be an instant fight trying to go with 2 (I bought 2 small humus and was going to pick the better of the 2 after they established. Well as soon as they hit the drip acclimation bucket together it was on and didn’t let up even once they were in QT and separated. They didn’t quit trying to get at one another. I had to make my selection quick and get the other to my LFS so neither died.

Love this set up you have and thanks for the thoughts on the Humas, I had a feeling that might have been. The case but I appreciate your help. Were those artificial corals bought as one piece or did you piece them together? You have my ideal tank setup my friend!

Thoughts on introducing a second trigger like a niger? Or will that likely lead to same issues as 2 humas?

Since it’s going to be a FO setup, I want to have as many fish as possible while not overloading the tank. Seems like 4-5 of the choices I am focused would be max.

Maybe others can give ideas on multiple triggers. Maybe a niger or blue jaw if it’s introduced before the humu but not sure.
The coral inserts are from Instant Reef. They are plug n play so individual “corals” can come off for cleaning.

For larger bioloads you can look at adding Marinepur blocks to the sump. It has a larger surface area for bacteria than live rock. I’ve got 4 of the 8”x8”x1” plates in my sump and also some of the 1.5” spheres that I pull out and use for setting up my QT when I need it. I also run an oversized skimmer. It’s a Reef Octopus 200int rated for up to 250 gallons.

My current stocking:
Picasso trigger-1
Powder blue-1
Koran angel-1
Blue spotted puffer-1
Pink face wrasse-1
Molly Miller blennies-2
Feather duster blenny-1

In QT:
Australian Harlequin Tusk

I have the same 4 fish in my tank they work well together. I'm thinking about adding a cat shark as well

Sharks aren’t a good idea with puffers and triggers or even angels. I want sharks as well but the shark would get picked on so instead I’ll build a shark pond after I get my fish room built in the backyard this summer!!

I don’t have experiance with sharks but what I am telling you comes from what the experienced people here have told me in my research.
