Everyone has their go too kits I find it’s more what you can afford honestly ive used a bunch different ones in my short time

API -seems to be the standard beginning kits And most LFS use

Red Sea/salifert- people seem to trust more and Red Sea has test kit refills Tests can be a lil confusing and time consuming at first but you get around to it

Hanna instruments- pricey but Quick and easy convenient with digital read outs I have salinity tester and alk tester I love the salinity tester but needs to be recalibrated monthly

I use Salifert to test Nitrate, Calcium, Carbonate hardness (KH), Phosphate, Magnesium and PH. There are a lot of options, and some are more accurate I'm sure. Salifert just seems inexpensive and fairly easy to run the tests. I use the API test kits for my fresh water tanks, but they just don't seem accurate enough for the reef in my opinion.
