I am going to transfer everything out of my 24 nano into a 28 gal. nano. I only have about 2-3 inches of sand right now in my 24. How deep should I make my new 28 gal. tank? I was thinking maybe about 4 or 5 inches?? What would work best for a 28 gal. reef? Thanks for any suggestions.

not deep at all. I just do enough to cover the bottom. in my opinon you only wanna do a deep sand bed like that if you are doing it in a refugium. other than that I wouldnt do a deep on in he display.

Thanks for the info. Another question if you don't mind. Do I put the live rock on top of the sand or put the rock in first and sand around it? Which is best and why? Thanks

1-2" sand bed is all ya need.
Put the Rock in first, then the sand around it. You don't want the rocks shifting when on top of the sand, and collapsing in the tank. Say a powerhead comes loose and blows a bunch of sand around, its possible to bring down the the whole scape.
