Good morning i am new to the reef world. I have owened african cichlids for yrs. And decided to convert over to salwater. I currently have a 30gal. Fwlro running for 4months now with 2clowns, 2yelllow belly damsels, 2turbo snails and 2 red chromis. I have 45lbs. Of live rocks and a dep sand bed. I recently took down my 75gal. Cichlid tank so i can start a larger saltwater tank. My question is can i clean the sand from. My cichlid tank and use it in my saltwater setup and. Allow the current live sand and rock to seed it ir is this a bad idea... the sand that was in the cichlid tank is part natures natural white sand and apart aragonite sand.......

I also had the same experience from moving from my Cichlid tank into SW. (However, I kept my Cichlid tank also). I would not suggest using same sand. Even though cichlids live in brackish water, they are still considered freshwater. Keep everything separate. Safe yourself the aggravation. Welcome and good luck.

Yea, normal sand is bad for a SW system, as it contains just to many things that will leach into the water and cause you way to many headaches. And on top of the, its course and will mash up the under bellies of any sand sifter you get.

Good sand Is not that expensive and since you are setting up a new tank now is a good time to start out with fresh sand.
