Sand bed...

I have a 1 inch sand bed, should I stir it up and vacuum it during my water change? What about the area where the siphon can't reach in small cracks?

Yeah. Definitely keep it clean.

Turn up your powerheads and blast the sand with the tool/turkey baster. Let the powerhead run for a bit until the water clears. Change filter socks.

Another way to stir in corners is rubberband a chopstick or similar to stick out past the end of your siphon hose and stir the sand with it. The suction from the siphon hose will collect what you stir up.

Or get an Engineer Goby...mine pulls sand from everywhere!

Yep. Always stir sand.

IMHO... Always start with dead sand and rinse the hell out of it
