Sand bed

Does anyone else's sand bed become like a sheet on top that combined together. Im been raking it with a plastic spoon weekly but am wondering what this is. Also if im getting one small dead spot should i buy a smaller power head to point in that spot currently have 2 tunze powerheads 6015. In a 29g. Its a harder to reach area. Thinking about maybe adding another maybe smaller one? Also would i benefit from a sand sifting starfish for stirring up my sand bed.

idk if its just algea. My phos is .03 and nitrate is 1ppm slowly working to raise my nitrate. Theres not much algea on the rocks my astrea snails are slowly taking it out

A high alk level will cause that to your sand bed. Check your alk level. Seems like overdosing kh if you are that is.

My alk is 10.4. I let it drop from 11.6 i am switching salts from red sea coral pro to probably the regular one.

I watched a video a while ago by reef dudes. He interviews a coral farmer, I forgot his name but he was a real wirey talkative guy and he said this is the result of two part containing soda ash and the "wrong" form of calcium.

I havent had it occur anymore. I didnt have good flow at the time too. Happily fixed that right now.
