So my fiances FOWLR tank is slowly becoming weird inverts tank with cucumbers, stars, lobsters, and conchs. Now she wants a sand dollars. Has anyone ever kept one? Anything special about them?

They need about a 2 FOOT deep sand bed to keep them alive. Unfortunately, none of our reef tanks have the biodiversity in our sand beds to keep them fed.

Keeping sand dollars successfully includes 2 important basics:
1. propper collection
2. sand bed with LOT-S-O Nutrients....

These little gems do better in a lagoon or soft coral set up....
if the tank is too clean it is not likely these guys will survive long....

Side note: harlequin shrimp love sand dollars:cry:

Yeah no sand dollars. Could get them easy but would hate to have them die. Her tank is up to 2 Queen Conchs (huge), 2 Long Spine Urchins, 1 Pencil Urchin, 1 ChocoChip Star. Need to find her some more weird stuff. She loves it.

Not sure if it fits the bill, but I once had a large Medusa worm that definitely fit in the weird catagory. :squigglemouth:

I just saw one at an LFS and they certainly fit the weird bordering give you nightmares category. It also had a shrimp living on it that apparently never leaves and feeds off the medusa worm's mucus layer. Delicious!

Too bad I don't have pics....

My friend took a pic of me once with a black medussa approx 20" I had hangging from my mouth.....

The LFS and customers had never seen one and I was supporting my expression of the medussa being non-poisonous.

Best luck i ever had with them was about a year. Like everyone said you need a deep sandbed and you need it to be a little dirty.
