Hey all ... so here's the deal

* Took down my 125 main DT. Previously is had Dino (about a month ago)
* Setting up a small frag, clown fish tank for some of my left overs from the DT
* I no longer have Dino, as I removed the skimmer, raised the nitrate and p04 which in turn killed the Dino (it has been gone for a good 3 weeks)

Am I able to add some of the sand to the smaller tank? Or will that still contain the Dino and run the risk of having another "flare up" in the smaller tank? Or should I just put the sand in a bucket and rinse it and remove all the nastiness, then put it into the smaller tank?

Most people buy new sand. Old sand is often viewed as so filled with waste as to disqualify if for reuse.

I would think if you throughly wash it in tap water with a hose, you should be able to get 99% of the wastes out. Then rinse it in RODI to wash out the tap water.

I would put in in a fluidized bed little by little with tap water, then do it again with rodi

If you moved rock, that may move dinos too. Not sure if the sand is adding much to the risk if cleaned, but I also generally wouldn't reuse sand unless the explicit purpose is to bring in organisms like bacteria. Sand is cheap to replace. Rock is less so.

I agree with Randy. I never reuse sand. Threw out sand from a 90, 120 and 40 gal when upgrading.
