I have been reading that you shouldn’t have anything inside of your qt except for some kind of structure for the fish to hide in, but my lfs told me that it would be ok to put live sand into it. And how do you get the medicines out of the qt water?

For me it depends on what fish. A wrasse that sleeps in the sand for instance gets a tub of sand to sleep in. A bare bottom makes it easier to siphon uneaten food, poo, and anything else I can. Too much sand can definitely mess with medications so you have to be careful.

I don't use any sand or live rock in QT.I don't even use a cup of sand when I treat wrasse.

Only use sand for those fish that require it - sand sleepers like leopard or halocheres (sp?) wrasses. Otherwise it just complicates things. Removing meds depends a little on what it is, but GAC is a good place to start.

I only use a small tupperware container of sand for fish that require sand for sleeping, otherwise it's bare bottom with some PVC pipes for places to hide.

After I need to remove a med, I do a large water change and then run ROX 0.8 carbon in a bag for a few days.

When I need to remove copper, I do a 100% water change, rinse with RODI and let the tank dry. Copper is the last step before the DT, and I use a separate temporary holding aquarium for up to a week until they're moved into the DT.

I wouldn't keep sand or rock in a QT at all, it just makes adding the correct dosages of medications harder.
