Currently have a 72 gallon bow front mixed reef w a 2inch sand bed. Have good water parameters right now. Also have a sump/refugium w a 2 inch sand bed w chaeto. Was thinking of ditching the sand bed to give more space for the chaeto. I do trim the chaeto, but was thinking of giving it full run of the chamber. Do you run sand in your refugium? If you do or don't , how come? Thanks fellow reefers!

I run it in my fuge but will be dumping it soon, I don't see the benefits of it, just remember when removing it to only do a little at a time

Previous set up I ran sand as well as rubble. Worked great IMO, plenty of pods and stuff used it. I guess if you decide to pull the sand then replace it with rubble to give the pods and stuff to hide.

If it were me, I would shut dose the return pump and remove the whole sand bed at once followed by a water change.

The purpose of a dsb is to have a place for bacteria to grow and thrive. It makes for a healthy aquarium. If you have lr and sand in your dt then it is not needed in your sump. However there are different discussions as to how deep it should be in your dt. Mine varies from 2-5" depending where my diamond goby decides to move on a daily basis. I believe 3-4" is what,s recommended. Also pods will grow and multiple happily in chaeto alone. This is just my experience but I have a very healthy mixed reef.
