I had a feed and check my tank for my vacation. come home, the glass is dirtier than expected and my sand is covered in what looks like rust dust? doing a waterchamge and cleaning the glass now. I'll check parms too.. anyone have a good guess?

Not sure what you mean by "feed" Maybe tank was fed too much and cyano developed as a result. A pic would help to identify if you haven't already syphoned it out.

Sounds like diatoms not cyano. Cyano is a mat not a dust.
