Sand Maintenance: What is your routine to keep it nice and clean?

What tools, methods, and how often do you clean? I want to hear from people who keep their sand NICE and white! Everybody else just pay attention. HA!

I removed all my sand and go BB but when I had sand I vacuumed it with a gravel vac. Still was never very clean looking but it helped! Lol

Vacuum very top layer during the water change in my dad's 120g. Other than that we don't touch it. I never touch my sand unless I need to move some coral or rock. 24g.

I just disturb the surface gently so as not to really stir things up and to more or less push the ugliness down-lol

My 330 lb Southdown DSB is 9 years old and still bright white all by itself. I do have nassarius snails and a few others but other than that no cleaning, stirring or vacuuming is needed ever.

+1 Except for about a dozen Cerith snails and a couple conch's I don't touch it. It's now 8 years old.

Each of my 3 tanks have shallow sandbeds -- around 2", in one tank sections are lower/higher due to the activities of my pistol shrimp.

Anyways, with each weekly water change I gravel vac, usually all the way down to the glass. For me, this keeps the sandbed nice and clean.

Have 1-2 inch sand bed, let all my critters keep it clean. Still looks awesome but who knows 5-6 years form now lol.

If it wasn't for my love of leopard wrasses I would honestly go bare bottom.

All for letting the tank and its inhabitants clean it themselves. My Engineer Goby turns the sand over and my Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber and various cleaning crew seem to do the rest

I'm a fan of the nassarius snail myself. I also like the blue leg hermit crabs. Those two have always kept my sand clean in the past so that's what I intend on going with this go-around.
