Just set up a D.I.Y. refugium. I ordered some macro algae and pods that will arrive next week. So what do most of you do for sand in your refugium. Yes or no? Hoping to create a good enough pod population to keep a mandarin.

If your not going to clean it on a regular basis then I say no to the sand. You should be able to achieve the same results going bare bottom with some Chaeto and a couple pieces of live rock IMO. Keep it simple.

I have a tiny fuge in back of my Biocube. No sand, but lots of caulerpa. Lots of pods. I have a pair of ORA scooter blennies and refresh the pods twice a year.
