I have been noticing small piles of sand in my tank and I am wondering who is the culprit.

Could it be the current? What fish stock do u have that could be moving the sand? My mimic tang likes to do this but only in one spot when the lights are off.

Give us a little to go on! What are our choices???????????????????? Since you have provided absolutely no information, I'm going to guess Santa Claus.

Have hippo tang, panther grouper, niger trigger,, a few hermits, and some snails (turbos, nerite, and nassarius)

Thought it maybe the snails but this just recently started and tank has been up for months

Have you recently moved anything in the tank such as rockwork or powerheads? If your powerheads are aimed too low they can create swirls/eddys which will pick up sand and drop it in patterns like that.
