Hi Reefers,

I am going to cycle a new tank and I wanted to change the sand I used before (artificial one) to live sand, and I was wondering what kind of sand do you recommend WHICH IS not blowing up by the powerheads and suitable for sand bed inhabitants like gobies.

Thank you!

the special grade araganite is one of the best for high flow tanks. Don't waste your money on live sand... it is just sand with bacteria in a bottle added.

and lastly...

rinse, rinse, rinse, take a break, then rinse, and then rinse again :)

Live sand is just regular sand with bacteria. There isn't any extra hitchhikers or benifitial organisms
in the bagged live sand beyond the bacteria. Add Bio-Spira to any sand and you have the same thing. Saying that, I prefer the caribsea special grade sized sand myself.

I'd also rinse it, whether live or dry.

I just added 20lbs of fuji pink last week and fresh salt water. I didn't rinse, just added their bio magnet(comes in the bag). Clouding was minimal. There are strands of white stuff, I think is bacteria. Tested the next day no ammonia, nitrites, nitrates.
HTH

Caribsea special grade sand for the win. I second using dry sand and rinsing it clean, which will take a while.
