Sand sifter starfish

Sand sifting starfish loosing legs could be a sign of starvation. They also eat the good stuff you want in the sand bed. IMO, there not a good choice for a reef tank.

The tank and sand isn't mature enough for it. I never could get mine to supplemental feed. When I seen it above the sand I'd try sticking a piece of krill or whatever directly under it. It would just move away. It's best that you give it to someone else until you have a good base of bacteria growing in the system.

Ultimately that sounds like what I’m going to have to do is give him away, I believe you’re right. There’s not enough bacteria to sustain the tank and him. Plus he’s already about 5 to 6 inches long which I think is kind of big.

I have had one in my 20 gallon for at least five years, and have had no problems. He stays buried most of the time, which is a good thing. Whenever he starts climbing the glass I just feed the tank more.

I'm not entirely sure why everyone is so complelty against the Sand Shifter. Maybe it's just my prefence but I like a clean sand bed. Just looks really nice to me. And he does a great job with it staying clean. Now I also feed mine shrimp every other day. Kinda cool to watch also.
How do you feed him shrimp?

I wouldn't have one as they do eat up every good item you need in your tank. They actually eat the beneficial bacterial off the sand in addition to detritus.

Also, he was missing half of two of his arms and they have started growing back since I moved him to the 80. The 80 has all new sand and 80% of the rock was "new" (cured dry rock)

They are scavengers and will eat any uneaten food. (To be honest I have only ever seen them respond to fleshy foods like mysis or LRS)
Completely off topic, but what does lrs mean
