sand vs no sand

I had black and white once. The black had coralline growing on it and it looked horrible.

This is NOT my tank, but from a fellow forum. This tank is setup with a brownish/earth-tone tile. I think it looks awesome and does not look out of place like a glass BB.

My 60 cube is bare bottom, but I use a starboard bottom. I went to a countertop manufacturer and found a pattern called "Sahara" and got some from their leftovers for cheap. I believe it is Dupont Corian. It is sand colored and has flecks of darker and lighter brown in it. I think it looks amazing. I will have to take a pic and post it. It is another option and serves as a buffer between your rock and glass in case of a rock slide. I know rocks have fallen in my tank more than once, and I appreciate having the starboard there.

I have several tanks running now. The oldest one is almost 9 years old due to moving a lot. I can tell you through experience that the tanks that require the least maintenance, are the healthiest, and are the cleanest looking are the one's with the deep sand beds, more than 4 inches.

i have no sand and will never have sand.i can point my powerheads where ever i want cleaning is easy.if a coral falls on the bottom upsidedown i dont worry about it getting killed by the sand.coraline is growing in which looks alot better to me then sand.im also starting to place zoas/palys on the bottom one day the whole bottom will be covered in z/p.i can move my rock when ever i want without a sand storm.fish cant barrie my corals.i dont get red algae anymore.i cant have some fish/inverts that i want but its a fair trade off.hope this helps.

I hear you!!! I'm doing the same. In Justin a month My nitrates have not elevated at all and the little frages that fall.... No worries :)
