I was wondering if adding sand to a established tank will cause a cycle?

depands on the sand live? for dryed sand.
IMO, i think LS would start a small cycle, i would add a little at a time. maybe a couple cup a week.

Dryed sand.

If I add live sand would that be better than dryed dead sand.

Ok I would like some feed back on this subject as well. I have never had a problem adding some sand to an existing system. I have done this several times over the years. Others may have differing opinions. I would like to know some tricks to adding without making a mess. My tank needs some new sand now?

PVC and a funnel?!?

I have always used "live" sand...the stuff pre-packed in a bag with water.never any ill effects

not a bad idea...seems like it might still want to kick up a cloud but maybe not get all over rocks and corals.

So If I add say 40lbs of sand to my established system there should be no or little ill effects?

Yes there should be no issues with adding more sand to your system. I have changed all of my sand in my 200, and i have added 20# here and there. No issues. Like mentioned above, a funnel and a piece of PVC pipe. Make sure to turn off all pumps and PHs.

I say no issues at all with dry sand. I added a 40lb bag to my 120g last year without any effects except nice, beautiful new sand! LOL!

I agree that the dry sand will not have issues. I just think the wet sand wont float around when you are trying to pour it in. If you soak the wet sand in a bucket first it may help.
