I've had my diamond Goby for about a year happily. I had anywhere between 2-4 in of sand bed.

The type of substrate is also very important to consider for burrowing animals. Many will use different size pieces to line the inner walls of their burrows to prevent them from collapsing so make sure you get the proper type and depth.
