hi all
Will be starting my new tank soon. Just would like to know if I can use my sand out of my old tank if it’s still running.
Cheers

You should be able to, assuming everything is in good shape with that tank. It will help the new tank cycle faster.

You can. But if you will be using live rock, having 'live sand' is less important IMHO. If this is the case, I'd consider rinsing the sand before using it. It's an easy process.

Put the sand in a bucket and stick in a garden hose with no nozzle on it and turn on the water. Move the hose in and out of the sand. Dirty water will come up and start to overflow the bucket. Keep moving the hose in and out in different spots until the water starts to clear. Dump off the excess water. Maybe even raise the back of the bucket a bit and let the water trickle out until it stops.

It should be good to go at that point. Some people will add saltwater to the sand, but I don't consider that necessary.

I agree with Reefman , You can easily use old sand but I would rinse out "all" cloudiness before adding to a new tank.

I agree with Ron Reefman and cracker with the only difference being I use the old tank water to rinse until it is clear and sometimes some new RODI saltwater, then transport to the new tank.

+1 on tank/RODI water, unless you're on a well water from the hose is likely chlorinated and would kill off most of the good stuff you're trying to add to the tank.

Cheers for the comments lads much appreciated.
Will do that when I get my tank moved in.
Cheers
