So I am considering purchasing a SM algae scrubber but I would like to know from people that have them what size they would recommend ( I can only fit the HOG version in my sump) for a 120 gallon tank with a heavy bio load? Also will it eliminate the need for water changes completely and also eliminate the need for using my gfo reactor and my biopellet reactor?

Please don't be afraid to comment[emoji3] I want your advice!

I have a good friend who loves his @mdbannister

While it will help keep your nutrients down I would still do water changes to replenish things that aren't dosed in the tank.

I do love mine! I have the SURF4 on a 180. @SantaMonica recommends that you gauge the size of the HOG you will use based on how much you feed (or other sources of phosphates that might contribute). If you're not sure which one to go with, I would contact them. They're super helpful at helping determine which one you will need.

As to whether or not it will eliminate the need for WC's and GFO, I think that will ultimately depend on which one you get, and how high your nutrients are running.

Bumping an old thread, because I am curious. I've seen mixed reviews, and some outright negative reviews, about the SURF scrubbers. That all said, there is not a lot out there from owners who have used them. @mdbannister, are you still using yours? Are you still happy with it?
