I’ve recently acquired a used unit, how best can I clean the bottom half? By this I mean the internal compartment which holds the algae itself and the outer foam?

The 3 options I have considered are;

1. 3%h2O2 applied to the inner and outer surfaces via a spray bottle?

2. Soak in RODI water mixed with non fragrance thin bleach?

3. Soak in white vinegar?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the bump, also thanks for the opinion. I will wait a more consistent opinion before I action. I hope whichever option it will bring my unit back to its new condition without any negative impact upon next use.

How large is your tank? I think I would just soak it in 50/50 vinegar and tap water overnight and then spray out the loose stuff the next day. Then rinse well a couple of times with RO water and then put it to use. Are you concerned with pests or just the nutrients from decaying material left over in the scrubber?

Scrub it good and leave it as is, I would definitely not add any other chemicals in there other than saltwater. You can unglue the strands, the foam could soak up the vinegar/bleach. When it’s full of algae, your not gonna care how clean the foam is.
