My birds nest has gotten thin over the last month or so and is now losing flesh. It grew like crazy for three months and has now retracted polyps and is starting to die. No changes to my parameters. Any ideas? Everything else is growing. Mixed reef from softies to acros.
Attached pics are a few before so you can see how it looked before and the ugly one is now.

ALK-9
Calc-420
Mag-1350
Salinity-1.026

I don't have much experience with this species (I've only had one for a few weeks) but from my extensive reading about the family I believe the thinning of the branches your seeing is caused from being a in a lower flow environment while the thicker branches your frag started as indicates it was in a higher flow environment. whats the flow situation in that part of the tank?

It’s in the same spot it’s always been . There is a variable powerhead that keeps it moving all the time. That was my first thought too.

Unfortunately thats all can say about the matter, my frag is my first sps so thats all the advice I feel comfortable sharing, hopefully some other stick people chime in!

High nitrates killed mine. Need to check nitrates and phosphate ASAP. If keeping sps checking those is a necessity

These guys need medium not strong light and moderate water flow
Placement is higher in the tank along with following:
Temp 77-79
Salinity. 1.025
Ph. 8.1 - 8.3
CA. 425-450
Mag 1300
Alk. 8/9
Nitrate .04

your mag is a tad high

This was size of 1/2 dollar and now 18”

I agree that nitrate and phosphate would be worth checking, especially if running any phosphate media or doing any carbon dosing.

Checked for stray voltage?

Did I miss it? What's the lighting?
