Hi all. Just pulled the rock out of my tank as I’m condensing two tanks. What do I do with the leftover rock? Too much rock to put in the combined tank, I want to clean off all the green algae and save it for future use. I know all the beneficial bacteria and what not will die but is there a proper way to clean?

I am assuming you want to remove the attached algae and you do not care if you destroy the bacterial fauna. Just toss it in some fresh water to which you have added some bleach. I forget what I added. But say the rock can be fit in a 5 gallon pail. Toss in rock, fill mostly with water and add say half a cup of bleach. The bleach will oxidize all of the organic material. Let sit overnight. Rinse off with a hose. If that has not done the job, just repeat with more bleach if you are so inclined.

After doing the bleach. I would let it sit overnight in fresh water or RODI would be better. Then let dry and you are good.
