Very interesting, if a bit surprising. With clowns as easy to breed in captivity as they are I wouldn't expect a big demand for wild caught.

Again, news reporters selling fear that big bad human beings are gonna destroy Mother Nature.

Mother Nature has been doing fine for 4.5 billion years and laughs at mans unintended consequences are going to knock Mother Nature off her feet. NOT!!!

Anyways.....

Not sure about the Aussie clownfish industry....but in the U.S. it's much much less expensive to tank breed clownfish than to wholesale buy wild caught ones.

I'm pretty sure (but could be wrong) that unless its listed as WILD CAUGHT.... almost all clowns are tank bred bc its cheaper to breed 100-200 baby fry ones in a tank at each spawning time. Higher PROFITS to sell tank bred clowns.

I've seen "Wild Caught" ones with sale prices 2x-3x higher than tank bred ones.

And all these DESIGNER clowns with crazy white and black patterns (I believe) is clown tank breeders getting diff clown species to bred that's NOT found in the wild.

I haven't seen a wild caught clown in a few years now, everything I see at my local store is ORA and another company who breeds them, and now even some locally bred clowns are showing up in the store as more folks are breeding them at home.

I am too lazy and lack room to breed my clowns, they provide free fish food every couple of months for the tank.
