Okay, this is going to sound weird, but it's totally legit.
I added two blue legged hermits, a scarlet hermit and two snails to my nano tank about a week or so ago and discovered the two snails dead a few days ago. I looked around the tank and found the scarlet hermit's shell and I couldn't see anything in it at all but, after a few more minutes of searching, I found the scarlet hermit's "body". It's tiny but the pinchers are clearly visible and it's bright red while there is nothing else of that colour in my tank. So I figure the little guy died too and throw his shell back into the tank. Today I'm doing a bit of housekeeping and tests and I see the shell over a bit from where I placed it and tiny little eyes peeking out of the hole.. I slowly move to get a better look and I see small red legs and then it notices me and disappears back into the shell. It is definitely in there and keeps scoping me out.
So, questions.. I keep tarantulas and scorpions and they both will molt their entire exoskeletons so it looks like they just cloned themselves (if they don't mangle the exuvium). Is this what I saw? If so, since there was no bigger shell available, it looks like the little guy just jumped back into the old one?
There is no way he was a hitchhiker as all rock use in this build was dry liferock.
